Jim Schaefer - Jersey Bathers

My first "ocean" painting was inspired by an early Jackson Pollock painting of a turbulent sea, which in turn had been inspired by the paintings of Albert Pinkham Ryder. Ever since early childhood I loved the beach, the swirling of the water, and the interaction I had with the waves, diving into them or riding them into the beach. For years I've worked on painting both the mechanics and the psycological impact of the water and of my interacton with it. The interaction of bathers with the water I find to be complex and mystifying.
